Orthodontic Treatment Age: When Should You Start?
Ever wondered about the right orthodontic treatment age and when to start? You’re not alone. At TGO Orthodontics, we often speak with parents who are unsure about when to start treatment for their child. While the ideal age can vary, there are some important milestones that help guide the best timing.
Age 7: Start with an Early Evaluation
The Canadian Association of Orthodontists (CAO) and American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) both recommend that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this point, an orthodontist can detect subtle issues with growth, bite, and tooth alignment—even if baby teeth are still present.
Starting with an early evaluation helps determine the ideal orthodontic treatment age for each individual child.
Early Treatment (Ages 7–10): Intercepting Problems Early
For certain issues—like crowding, crossbites, or jaw imbalances—early intervention (also known as Phase 1 treatment) may begin between ages 7 and 10. The goal is to guide jaw development and make future treatment easier and more effective.
Intercepting problems early at this stage allows us to play a key role in optimizing the orthodontic treatment age and preventing more complex problems later on.
Comprehensive Treatment (Ages 11–14): The Most Common Time
Most orthodontic treatments—such as braces or clear aligners—typically begin between ages 11 and 14, once most or all permanent teeth are in place. We call it a comprehensive treatment. During this stage, growth spurts can be used to help align the teeth and jaws more efficiently.
For many patients, this is considered the most effective orthodontic treatment age.
⚕️ Orthodontic Care for Adults
Orthodontic treatment isn’t just for kids and teens—many adults seek care to improve their smile, bite function, or overall dental health. Whether using braces or clear aligners, adult patients can achieve great results at any age.
There’s no “wrong” orthodontic treatment age—just the right plan for your smile.
